MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football assistant coach Dameyune Craig has accepted an offer to become quarterbacks coach at Florida State under Jimbo Fisher, it was announced Friday on Mobile sports radio station WNSP by host Pat Greenwood.
The move reunites Craig with Fisher, who recruited, signed and coached him at Auburn in the 1990s. Craig leaves the staff of Jaguars head coach Joey Jones, where he had been part of the program since its earliest days.
Ties to the Program’s Beginnings
Appearing on WNSP with Greenwood, Craig discussed his relationship with Fisher and his time at South Alabama. He recalled the staff’s first meetings in the basement of the Mitchell Center, when coaches had to sell the new program to recruits with little more than an undeveloped, wooded hillside and plans for a field house and practice fields.
Craig said the program was in good hands with Jones, adding that he had believed that from the start and expected the Jaguars to keep improving as they work toward the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Craig had been known as an effective recruiter in the Mobile area, and his local ties could keep him recruiting the region for the Seminoles.
Second Departure From Original Staff
Craig is the second assistant to leave Jones’ staff since Jones was hired to launch the South Alabama football program. Les Koenning departed for Mississippi State last year, joining the staff of Dan Mullen after Mullen was named the Bulldogs’ head coach.
South Alabama began playing football in 2009 and is building toward full NCAA competition. Jones will now look to fill the vacancy on his staff.
