MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama offensive coordinator Greg Gregory will not return to the Jaguars’ football staff next season, according to a report Sunday from Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com.
The report surfaced on Dec. 4, after the conclusion of the Jaguars’ 2011 season. South Alabama had not issued a statement on Gregory’s status as of Sunday, and university officials indicated that an official announcement on the coaching staff was expected Monday, Dec. 5.
A Change on Joey Jones’ Staff
Gregory directed the South Alabama offense under head coach Joey Jones, who was hired to build the university’s football program from the ground up. The Jaguars began playing football in 2009, and Jones has led the program since its first snap.
No details on the reason for Gregory’s exit, or on a possible successor, were included in the initial report.
Program in Transition
The move comes at a pivotal time for the young program. South Alabama, a longtime member of the Sun Belt Conference in its other sports, is in the process of moving its football team up to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.
The Jaguars play their home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
Official Word Expected
South Alabama athletics was expected to address the coaching change in an official announcement on Monday. Any further information on Gregory’s status and the Jaguars’ plans at offensive coordinator is expected to come from the university at that time.
