South Alabama football travels to Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday to face Oklahoma State, looking to correct the mistakes from its season-opening loss to Louisiana Tech.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be televised on FSN. Oklahoma State is favored by 31.5 to 32.5 points, depending on the sportsbook.
Lessons From the Opener
First-year coach Steve Campbell said the errors in the Louisiana Tech game were correctable, describing some as communication problems and others as technique issues.
South Alabama rushed for more than 200 yards in the opener but threw for 91. All three Jaguar quarterbacks played, with Cephus Johnson taking three snaps and throwing one pass. Defensively, South Alabama struggled against the Louisiana Tech offensive line and running game, allowing more than 200 rushing yards.
Cowboys Coming Off Big Night
Oklahoma State opened its season with a lopsided win over Missouri State, piling up 732 yards of total offense, the third-highest total in school history. Cowboys coach Mike Gundy nonetheless called his team’s performance “average at best.”
Gundy described South Alabama as an “athletic group” that “has skilled kids and some good wideouts,” adding that “their linebackers are active.”
Rematch of 2017 Meeting
The teams met last season at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, where Oklahoma State won 44-7. The Cowboys ran their up-tempo offense at a rapid pace behind quarterback Mason Rudolph, limiting South Alabama’s ability to rotate its defensive linemen.
Quarterback Cole Garvin sprained an ankle in that game and missed several weeks. Dallas Davis, who was still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, returned to the starting lineup earlier than planned as a result.
