MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football concluded its open-week practices Wednesday with a two-hour session devoted to fundamentals, early game-planning for Arkansas State and extra repetitions for younger players. The South Alabama open week comes as the Jaguars manage several injuries along the defensive line.
Wednesday’s workout mirrored Tuesday’s, combining fundamental drills with installation of portions of the plan for the Jaguars’ next opponent and a short scrimmage involving younger players.
Injuries on the Defensive Front
Head coach Joey Jones said four defensive linemen are currently out following the Troy game. Romelle Jones is recovering from an injury sustained early in the NC State game, and Montavious Williams injured an ankle against Troy. Anthony Taylor suffered a broken leg against Mississippi State that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.
“We just tried to install parts of the gameplan and had some good fundamental work today,” Jones told the Press-Register. “We had a little scrimmage with the young guys again today so I think that this break is coming at a real good time. I think if we had to play this weekend we’d be in bad shape. We’ve got about four defensive linemen out. They’ll be back, but they would be in some pretty significant pain if they had to play this weekend so it came at a pretty good time.”
Schedule Ahead
The Jaguars, 1-4 entering the break, have Thursday, Friday and Saturday off. Players will then return for meetings and game-plan study before going back to the practice field Monday afternoon to begin a regular game-week routine.
South Alabama travels to Jonesboro, Ark., to face Arkansas State, the defending Sun Belt Conference champion, on Oct. 13. The contest is the first of eight consecutive Sun Belt opponents to close the Jaguars’ schedule.
