MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama held a two-hour practice Wednesday as it continued preparing for next Thursday’s season opener against Texas-San Antonio, with the Jaguars’ final preseason scrimmage set for Thursday morning.
Practice Structure
The session opened with position drills before moving to goal-line and short-yardage work. The offense then ran plays against the scout team defense.
Later, the offense worked on blitz pickup against the defense. Wide receiver Bryant Lavender made three catches during that period, two from C.J. Bennett and one from Ross Metheny, and Brandon Bridge ran for a touchdown.
Near the end of practice, the team moved into skeleton passing drills, where Metheny threw two touchdown passes.
Jones: Win the Game Now
Head coach Joey Jones said the players arrived ready to work and credited his assistants with preparing them.
“I thought it was good,” Jones said. “They came ready to work. I think our staff is doing a great job of getting the kids ready to practice. We talked to them about winning the game now, and not on Thursday or on a Saturday. We have to win it now and they bought in.”
“We certainly have some things we have to clean up and get better at, but I’m pleased with the effort,” he said. “We just have to get ready for that ballgame.”
Closed Scrimmage Thursday
South Alabama’s final scrimmage of preseason camp will be held Thursday morning and is closed to the public. The Jaguars will begin full game-week preparation for UTSA on Friday.
The 2012 season is South Alabama’s first as a full member of the Sun Belt Conference and the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Jaguars play their home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
