Troy’s defense limited South Alabama to a pair of field goals Thursday night, and the Trojans won the annual Battle for the Belt game 10-6 in a nationally televised Sun Belt Conference matchup.
The loss left South Alabama at 5-2 overall and 2-1 in Sun Belt play. Troy improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
The game was the latest meeting in the in-state rivalry between the two Sun Belt programs, with the winner claiming the Battle for the Belt trophy. South Alabama is in its second season under head coach Kane Wommack.
Defenses Dominate
Neither offense found much room. South Alabama finished with 246 yards of total offense, gaining 215 through the air and 31 on the ground.

Key Reviews and Calls
Several officiating decisions shaped the closing stages. A deep pass from Carter Bradley intended for Devin Voisin near the Troy 4-yard line was reviewed and ruled incomplete. A horse-collar penalty called against Troy was later picked up by officials.
On South Alabama’s final possession, a pass went into and then out of a receiver’s hands. Officials ruled it a catch and fumble, the call was upheld on replay review, and time expired.
