MOBILE, Ala. — Shakira Nettles made two free throws with 4.5 seconds left as the South Alabama Lady Jaguars overcame a 10-point deficit to beat Southern Miss 66-64 at the Mitchell Center.
The win improved South Alabama to 3-0. Southern Miss fell to 2-1.
Late Rally
South Alabama shot 30 percent in the second half and trailed by six points late. Nettles was fouled while scoring on a layup and missed the free throw, but teammate Shaniece Brunner grabbed the rebound and found Nettles for another layup that cut the deficit to two.
After Southern Miss missed two free throws, Jessica Starling tied the game on a layup with eight seconds remaining.
Following a Southern Miss timeout, Nettles stole the inbounds pass and was fouled driving to the basket. She made both free throws with 4.5 seconds left to give the Lady Jaguars the lead for good.
Leading Scorers
Starling led South Alabama with 24 points. Nettles scored 16, and they were the only Lady Jaguars in double figures.
