MOBILE, Ala. — The South Alabama Lady Jaguars held off a second-half rally by UAB for a 77-64 win Monday night at the Mitchell Center, staying unbeaten early in the season.
Shakira Nettles, Jessica Starling and Karina Sproal combined for 48 points. Nettles led all scorers with 17, Starling added 16 and Sproal scored a career-high 15, all in the first half.
Early Run
UAB scored on its first two possessions before South Alabama answered with a 14-2 run, helped by three Blazers turnovers. Sproal started the run with a 3-pointer, one of only three South Alabama made in the game.
The Lady Jaguars led by 12 points at halftime.
Holding Off the Blazers
UAB scored two quick baskets to open the second half and cut the lead to single digits for the first time since about the midpoint of the first half. South Alabama pushed the margin back to 13.
With about nine minutes left, UAB pulled within four points, but the Lady Jaguars did not allow the Blazers any closer the rest of the way.
