WASHINGTON — The South Alabama Lady Jaguars suffered their first loss of the season, 64-59 to host George Washington, then rebounded to beat Liberty 65-61 in the consolation game of the George Washington Thanksgiving Tournament.
The split left South Alabama at 5-1 on the season.
Opening Loss to George Washington
South Alabama struggled offensively in Friday’s opener against the Colonials. George Washington held a 34-14 advantage in points in the paint.
Shakira Nettles led the Lady Jaguars with 16 points. Jessica Starling scored 15 and Karina Sproal added 10.
Consolation Win Over Liberty
South Alabama then faced Liberty, which has played in 11 of the last 12 NCAA Tournaments.
The first half was close throughout. The Lady Jaguars found their rhythm after halftime, and the game’s last close moment came at 47-46 with 7:56 remaining. South Alabama pulled away from there and held on for a four-point win.
Starling led three Lady Jaguars in double figures with 18 points. Nettles scored 16 and Sarda Peterson added 11.
