MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama will collect national letters of intent from its 2014 football recruiting class Wednesday, with defensive linemen and defensive backs making up a large share of the National Signing Day group.
The Jaguars, coached by Joey Jones, also targeted offensive players for the class, though the offense returns eight starters for the 2014 season. That group includes offensive lineman Melvin Meggs, who missed all of the 2013 season with a knee injury.
Commitments That Changed
As is common across college football on signing day, South Alabama has seen some earlier commitments change course.
- Quarterback Kilton Anderson, who had verbally committed to South Alabama, is expected to sign with Fresno State.
- Defensive back Shaq Jones has switched his commitment to Louisville, coached by Bobby Petrino, though he has reportedly continued to talk with other programs, including Georgia.
- Defensive lineman Jalen Harvey verbally committed to Syracuse in recent days.
Announcement Expected Wednesday Evening
South Alabama is expected to announce its full list of signees Wednesday evening once letters of intent have been received.
Program Background
Jones has led South Alabama since the program began play in 2009. The Jaguars finished 6-6 in 2013, their first season of eligibility for the postseason as a full Football Bowl Subdivision member.
