ATLANTA — Freshman Monique Autmon and substitute Jordan Duncan scored goals Thursday as South Alabama defeated Georgia State 2-1 in a Sun Belt Conference women’s soccer match.
The win improved the Jaguars to 10-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in Sun Belt play.
Autmon Breaks Through
Autmon put South Alabama ahead in the 22nd minute. She collected a Lauren Allison shot that had been deflected and curled it past the Georgia State goalkeeper, who entered the match leading the conference in saves.
Duncan Doubles the Lead
Duncan, who entered the game as a substitute, scored about seven minutes after coming on, near the midpoint of the second half. Clarissa Hernandez sent the ball behind the Panthers’ back line, and Georgia State’s Brie Haynes came out to clear it but missed. Duncan placed the ball into the open net for her fifth goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.
Georgia State scored in the 85th minute to cut the margin to one, but South Alabama held on over the final minutes.
