MOBILE, Ala. — The South Alabama Jaguars soccer team opened Sun Belt Conference play against one of their biggest rivals, the Troy Trojans, on Thursday, Sept. 17.
South Alabama (2-4-1) hosted Troy (1-5-2) at 7 p.m. at The Cage, located at 6080 Old Shell Road in Mobile.
A Rivalry the Jaguars Have Owned Lately
The Jaguars are 16-8-1 all-time against the Trojans and entered the match looking to make it eight consecutive wins in the series.
The last time the two teams met was Oct. 29, 2025, when the Jaguars took a 1-0 win to conclude the regular season.
A seven-game winning streak in a conference rivalry is a substantial run in college soccer, where single-goal margins and draws are common and where roster turnover every few years tends to level series records out. The 16-8-1 overall mark reflects that recent dominance layered on top of a longer, more competitive history.
Where Both Teams Stood
South Alabama came in off a 3-1 win over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions on Sept. 6. The team also carried an eight-game home winning streak.
Troy came in off a 3-3 draw against the Alcorn State Braves on Sunday, Sept. 13.
Both records — 2-4-1 and 1-5-2 — reflect the reality of non-conference scheduling in college soccer. Programs use the pre-conference stretch to face strong opponents and work through rotations, and records from that period frequently bear little relationship to how a team performs once league play begins. Conference standings reset the picture entirely.
Troy’s 3-3 draw with Alcorn State is a more informative data point than the overall record. A team conceding three goals in a draw has defensive questions; a team scoring three has an attack capable of causing problems.
The Home Streak
South Alabama’s eight-game home winning streak is the number that mattered most going into a conference opener. The Cage on Old Shell Road has been a genuinely difficult venue for visiting teams, and opening league play at home against a rival is close to the best-case scheduling outcome for a program looking to establish itself in the conference table early.
Faculty and Staff Appreciation
The theme of the match was faculty and staff appreciation night. The program also handed out “Beat Troy” T-shirts at The Cage.
Promotional nights of that kind serve a real purpose for Olympic-sport programs, which compete for attention against football and basketball. A themed night that brings university employees and their families to a soccer match introduces the program to an audience that might not otherwise attend, and a portion of them come back.
