MOBILE, Ala. — The South Alabama softball team has a new destination this weekend. The 2014 Georgia Softball Classic in Athens, Ga., has been canceled because of wintry conditions, and the Jaguars will instead travel to Baton Rouge, La., to play two games Saturday.
South Alabama will face Northwestern at 10 a.m. and No. 21 LSU at 3 p.m.
LSU Finds Room
The Jaguars had been scheduled to play Ohio, Mercer, Furman and host Georgia in Athens. LSU worked South Alabama into its own weekend tournament after the Georgia event was called off.
“We were looking forward to facing some quality opponents in Athens this weekend,” head coach Becky Clark said. “But, fortunately, LSU was able to work us into their tournament, so we’re happy to still face a couple of quality teams on Saturday.”
Jaguars Ranked in Both Polls
South Alabama went 5-0 at its season-opening Mardi Gras Invitational, a run that included an 8-0 win over then-No. 21 UAB. The Jaguars are ranked 18th in the USA Today/NFCA poll and 19th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, the highest ranking of any Sun Belt Conference team in both polls.
