South Alabama Softball Visits Troy, Baseball Opens Series at Georgia Southern With Kevin Hill on Mound

No. 22 South Alabama softball closes the regular season at Troy, while Jaguars baseball opens a Sun Belt series at second-place Georgia Southern behind Kevin Hill.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama’s softball and baseball teams are both on the road this weekend for Sun Belt Conference series, with No. 22 softball closing its regular season at Troy and baseball opening a three-game set at Georgia Southern on Friday.

Softball at Troy

The Jaguars (33-9, 14-3 Sun Belt) and Troy will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and finish the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.

South Alabama sits second in the conference standings behind Louisiana-Lafayette (34-8, 17-3), which has lost three straight. Troy (31-20, 13-7) is third and has won its last two games.

The series is the last of South Alabama’s regular season. The 2015 Sun Belt Conference Tournament runs Wednesday, May 6, through Saturday, May 9, in San Marcos, Texas.

Baseball at Georgia Southern

South Alabama (29-17, 14-7 Sun Belt) is third in the league standings and visits second-place Georgia Southern. The Jaguars swept conference leader Georgia State at home last weekend and have won four straight Sun Belt games and six of their last seven league contests.

South Alabama is coming off a 7-6 loss in 17 innings at Southern Miss on Wednesday.

All times are Central. All three games will stream on ESPN3 and air on WNTM 710 AM in Mobile and the iHeartRadio app.

Probable Starters

Kevin Hill, named National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, starts the opener. Hill threw a one-hit, complete-game shutout in last week’s series opener against Georgia State.

Georgia Southern will counter with left-hander Evan Challenger (5-0), who has a 1.06 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 14 walks in 59 1/3 innings.

Right-hander Austin Bembnowski (2-3) is scheduled to start Saturday for South Alabama, and left-hander Jared Gates (4-2) will start Sunday.
