South Alabama sets football seat selection for May 19, baseball hosts Troy, Beth Pilgrim makes Sun Belt All-Tournament team, and Ronnie Arrow signs two players.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football season ticket holders will begin choosing their seats next week, the baseball team opens a pivotal final regular-season series against Troy tonight, and softball pitcher Beth Pilgrim and two basketball signees headline the latest news from Jaguars athletics.

Football: Seat Selection Begins May 19

With 113 days remaining before the first football game in school history, South Alabama will begin seat selection for season ticket holders at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Tuesday, May 19.

About 4,500 people have already bought season tickets for the inaugural 2009 season under head coach Joey Jones. The USA Ticket Sales Office is recommending that season ticket holders choose their seats by phone. Seats may also be selected in person on campus, though the ticket office said those who come in person may experience delays.

Baseball: Jaguars Host Troy to Close Regular Season

South Alabama’s baseball team has lost four straight games, all at home. The Jaguars were swept by FIU last weekend by scores of 9-1, 21-15 and 8-7, then lost 7-5 to Southern Miss on Tuesday night at Eddie Stanky Field.

South Alabama, 11-15 in Sun Belt Conference play, closes the regular season with a three-game home series against in-state rival Troy beginning tonight. The results will help determine whether the Jaguars qualify for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which will be played in Troy.

Softball: Pilgrim Makes History at Sun Belt Tournament

The Jaguars’ softball season ended last week at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Denton, Texas. South Alabama beat third-seeded Western Kentucky in the first round, fell to seventh-seeded Florida Atlantic in the second round and was eliminated by Western Kentucky in a rematch in the losers’ bracket.

Top-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette lost its opening game to eighth-seeded Louisiana-Monroe but won five straight games to claim the tournament title.

Junior Beth Pilgrim became the first South Alabama softball player named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament team. It is her third conference honor of the season. She was named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week on April 6 and earned second-team All-Sun Belt recognition on May 5.

Men’s Basketball: Two Signees for Arrow

Head coach Ronnie Arrow added two players to his incoming class this week.

  • Rob Phillips, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Charis Prep School in Goldsboro, N.C., signed a national letter of intent. Phillips averaged 23.1 points per game for Charis while shooting 56.9 percent from 3-point range and 92 percent from the free throw line.
  • P.J. Reyes, a 6-foot-4 wing from Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo., also signed a national letter of intent. Reyes started 33 games and averaged 20.3 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 47 percent from the field. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Jaguars play their home basketball games at the Mitchell Center.
