SAUCIER, Miss. — South Alabama’s Tyler Klava shot a 4-under-par 68 on Monday to share the individual lead after the first round of the Sun Belt golf championship, and the Jaguars sit third in the team standings at Grand Bear Golf Club.
Klava Eagles Two Par-5s
Klava played the par-5 holes in 6 under par on the 7,072-yard, par-72 course. He made birdies on the second and fifth holes and eagles on the 11th and 15th.
Texas State’s Stuart Smallwood is tied with Klava for the individual lead. Smallwood made two of his three birdies on the back nine. Klava and Smallwood were two of nine players in the 50-man field to finish the opening round under par.
Team Standings
Texas-Arlington leads the team competition after a 2-under-par 286. Georgia State is second at even-par 288, and South Alabama is third at 5-over 293.
Blake Kelley shot an even-par 72 for the Jaguars. Lane Hulse shot 76, playing the back nine in 1 under after a bogey and a double bogey on the front nine. Michael Garretson shot 79, with two of his three birdies coming on the 11th and 15th holes.
Second Round
The second round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday with split tees. South Alabama will tee off at 8:45 a.m. on the first hole, grouped with Georgia State for the second straight day and joined by Texas-Arlington.
