The South Alabama men’s golf team shot an 8-under-par 280 in the final round of the Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championship, the low team round of the tournament, but finished one stroke behind champion Georgia State.
Final-Round Charge
Senior Blake Kelley led the Jaguars on the final day with a season-best 4-under 68. Lane Hulse and Tyler Klava each shot 2-under 70, Ryan Pope carded an even-par 72 and Michael Garretson shot 74.
South Alabama finished the three rounds at even-par 864.
Georgia State Holds On
Georgia State shot 287 in the final round to finish at 863 and win the championship by one stroke. The title gives the Panthers the Sun Belt’s automatic berth in next month’s NCAA Regionals.
Individual Results
Texas State’s Stuart Smallwood won the individual title with an 8-under 208 over 54 holes.
Klava tied for second, three strokes behind Smallwood. Hulse also placed in the top 10 with a tie for 10th, and Kelley tied for 14th at 220.
Waiting on Selection Monday
The NCAA Division I men’s golf championship selections will be announced live on Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive” on Monday, May 5, from 9 to 10 a.m. CDT. The show will also stream on Golf Channel’s website, and the field will be posted on the NCAA’s website afterward.
South Alabama received an at-large bid to an NCAA Regional last season, the first at-large selection in program history.
