South Alabama Men’s Golf Sits Second After First Round of Old Waverly Collegiate Classic

South Alabama shot a 2-under-par team score in the weather-delayed opening round of the Old Waverly Collegiate Classic and sits second behind Cincinnati.

WEST POINT, Miss. — South Alabama’s men’s golf team shot a 2-under-par 286 in the opening round of the Old Waverly Collegiate Classic and sits in second place, two strokes behind leader Cincinnati, in its final regular-season event.

The tournament, hosted by Mississippi State, is being played at Old Waverly Golf Club, a par-72 course that measures 7,088 yards.

Three Jaguars at Par or Better

Michael Garretson and Blake Kelley each shot 2-under-par 70 to lead the Jaguars. Tyler Klava posted an even-par 72, Ryan Pope carded a 74 and Lane Hulse shot 75.

Pope, a freshman, led the team with five birdies. He made back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes and again on the 14th and 15th. He also made a 3 on the 444-yard 11th hole, the longest par 4 on the course.

Leaderboard

Cincinnati leads the 15-team field at 4-under-par 284. The Bearcats and the Jaguars were the only teams to finish the first round under par.

Florida and Mississippi are tied for third, three shots behind South Alabama. Memphis, the top-ranked team entering the event, is fifth with a 290, one stroke ahead of Austin Peay, Louisiana-Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana.

Weather Delays Schedule

Weather delayed the start of the tournament on Sunday, pushing completion of the first round to Monday and leaving the second round unfinished. Play resumes Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., with players picking up where they left off in the second round before starting the third and final round to complete the tournament.

South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
