MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama freshman Mechell Daniel has been named the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced.
The award extends a Jaguar streak to five consecutive weeks in which a South Alabama player has earned the conference’s freshman honor. It is the seventh time overall this season that a Jaguar has received the weekly award.
Week in Review
Daniel, a native of Chelmsford, England, led South Alabama’s attack with 29 kills over two matches. She hit .329 for the week and averaged 4.14 kills and 4.86 points per set.
She also led the Jaguars on defense with 27 digs, an average of 3.86 per set, and recorded a double-double in each match. Daniel added two service aces and five total blocks.
The two double-doubles give her 10 for the season, nine of which have come against Sun Belt opponents.
Among Conference Leaders
Daniel ranks third in the Sun Belt in kills at 3.69 per set and third in points at 4.25 per set. She is tied for fourth in the league in service aces with 0.28 per set.
A Record Year for Weekly Honors
Before this season, only six players in South Alabama volleyball history had received a weekly conference award. The Jaguars have already collected seven freshman honors during the 2013 season.
