South Alabama Volleyball Opens 2012 at 2-1 After Wins Over Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech

South Alabama volleyball started 2012 at 2-1, beating Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech after an opening loss to Central Arkansas.

South Alabama volleyball opened its 2012 season with a 2-1 weekend at the Southern Miss Invitational, rebounding from an opening loss to Central Arkansas with victories over host Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech.

The Jaguars swept Southern Miss in straight sets before beating Louisiana Tech. The win over the Bulldogs was South Alabama’s first against Louisiana Tech since the 2000 season.

Hassell, Mohler Earn All-Tournament Honors

Jenna Hassell and Olivia Mohler were both named to the Southern Miss Invitational all-tournament team.

Mohler led South Alabama on both offense and defense in the final two matches. Against Louisiana Tech, she finished with 14 kills and five block assists while hitting .423.

Balanced Effort Against Louisiana Tech

Melissa Waelter added 12 kills against the Bulldogs, and Lindsay Schwartz contributed 10. Setter Katariina Kananen recorded 39 assists and 16 digs for the 15th double-double of her career. South Alabama’s junior libero added 15 digs.

Up Next

South Alabama travels to St. Louis this weekend for the Active Ankle Challenge, hosted by Saint Louis University. The Jaguars open the tournament against Southern Illinois at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
