LAFAYETTE, La. — Ronneka Robertson turned in a career performance with 28 points and 17 rebounds, but Louisiana-Lafayette pulled away at the free-throw line in overtime to beat the South Alabama women 68-61 on Sunday at the Cajundome.
The Ragin’ Cajuns made 9 of 10 free throws in the game, while the Lady Jaguars went 5-of-10 from the line, and the difference at the stripe decided the extra period.
Losing Streak Reaches Seven
The loss was South Alabama’s seventh in a row and left the Lady Jaguars at 7-19 overall and 5-11 in Sun Belt Conference play.
The slide began Feb. 6 at Troy, where starting point guard Brittany Webb suffered an injury that ended her season. The injury left an already short-handed roster especially thin at point guard.
Sun Belt Tournament Picture
The top eight teams in the Sun Belt standings earn spots in the conference tournament in New Orleans. South Alabama has fallen out of that group with two games remaining and sits two games behind three teams tied at 7-9 in league play.
To have a chance at a berth, the Lady Jaguars must win both of their remaining games and get help from the teams ahead of them. If South Alabama wins twice and Louisiana-Monroe loses its final two games, the Lady Jaguars would qualify.
Louisiana-Monroe closes the regular season on the road at Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock, the first- and third-place teams in the conference.
Home Stretch
Both of South Alabama’s remaining games are at the Mitchell Center in Mobile. The Lady Jaguars host Texas State on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., then close the regular season Saturday against Texas-Arlington.
Head coach Terry Fowler’s team had dropped a 76-70 decision at Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday before Sunday’s overtime loss in Lafayette.
