ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — A sea of caftans is heading for The Wharf.
The South Baldwin Newcomers Club will host Romp the Wharf on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Wharf and Portside on Main in Orange Beach.
The Concept
The event takes its inspiration from the “Mrs. Roper Romp” phenomenon — a social-media-driven trend in which groups dress as Helen Roper, the flamboyantly caftan-clad landlady from the classic television sitcom “Three’s Company,” and descend on a bar district together.
The trend spread from city to city over recent years on the strength of a simple formula: an instantly recognizable costume, a large group, and a bar crawl. Charitable versions followed, which is what Romp the Wharf is.
Tickets and What They Buy
A $20 donation gets participants a Swag Bag and a Perks Pass, which provides access to perks and prizes throughout the evening.
All proceeds go directly to three categories of beneficiary: local high school scholarships, local nonprofit charities, and breast cancer awareness and care initiatives.
The timing is deliberate on the last point. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and events scheduled that month across Baldwin County commonly direct a portion of proceeds toward screening access, patient support or awareness programming.
The Evening’s Program
Beyond the costumes, the event includes:
- NFL football on the outdoor screen at Portside.
- “Caftan Comps” — food and drink specials for participants.
- “Stanley Specials.”
- Music, raffles and a group photo opportunity intended to capture what organizers describe as a massive, vibrant “Sea of Caftans.”
The Dress Code Is Flexible
Mrs. Roper-inspired caftans are highly encouraged, but organizers have deliberately widened the door. Attendees can also arrive in disco duds, vintage clothing, throwback football jerseys, or classic resort wear.
That flexibility is a practical choice. A strict costume requirement filters out anyone who does not already own the outfit or does not want to buy one; a loose one lets a person show up in a Hawaiian shirt and still be in the spirit of the thing. For a fundraiser, the second approach fills more seats.

The layout suits an event of this kind. A walkable district with multiple venues means a group can move between stops without driving, and the outdoor common areas accommodate a large group photo — which, for an event built partly around a visual, matters.
Scholarships as a Beneficiary
The scholarship portion of the proceeds goes to local high school students. For community organizations in Baldwin County, scholarship funds are a common giving priority, and the awards are typically modest individually but meaningful against the cost of a first year at a community college or a state university.
