Rain pushed back the start of one of the Gulf Coast’s largest high school soccer events, but the Southern Shootout is ready to kick off at the Foley Soccer Complex.
The tournament was delayed Thursday by bad weather and now begins at 9 a.m. Friday, with games running through Saturday evening. More than 100 teams from across Alabama and the Southeast are entered.
Teams play three games each and are divided by skill level into eight boys’ pools and six girls’ pools. The boys’ top division features Mountain Brook, Spain Park, Oak Mountain, Enterprise, McGill-Toolen and Davidson. Defending 6A state champion St. Paul’s and defending 5A state champion Briarwood Christian are also in the field.
Tournament director Chad Harrelson said this is the 17th year for the Southern Shootout and the largest field ever as the event continues to grow.
