That research focus recently earned him recognition on a national stage: at the 2026 American Transplant Congress, he received a Poster of Distinction for research examining race-neutral eGFR calculations. The eGFR, or estimated glomerular filtration rate, is a standard lab measurement used to gauge how well the kidneys are functioning, and the formulas historically used to calculate it have come under scrutiny in recent years for producing results that disadvantaged Black patients. Dr. Ikrai’s research examined how race-neutral versions of that calculation could help reduce disparities in transplant access for African American patients, a topic of growing importance across the medical field as hospitals work to make organ allocation and treatment decisions more equitable.
A Track Record of Humanitarian Work
Outside the clinic, Dr. Ikrai has a history of volunteer medical service. He previously worked with outreach teams in Jordan that provided free healthcare to displaced refugees, and he has taken part in community programs aimed at supporting vulnerable populations.
