USA Health Welcomes Kidney Specialist Dr. Hamza Ikrai to Mobile Physician Team
USA Health has added nephrologist and transplant kidney specialist Dr. Hamza Ikrai to its Mobile physician team, expanding local access to kidney disease and transplant-related care.
USA Health has expanded its roster of kidney care specialists with the addition of Dr. Hamza Ikrai, a physician trained in both general nephrology and transplant nephrology, who has joined the health system’s Mobile-based team of providers.
Why Nephrology Care Matters Locally
A nephrologist is a physician who focuses on diagnosing and managing diseases of the kidneys, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, high blood pressure related to kidney function, electrolyte imbalances, and the medical care surrounding kidney transplantation. Kidney disease often develops quietly alongside conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
A Training Path Spanning Three Countries and Multiple Institutions
Dr. Ikrai’s medical education began at Hashemite University in Jordan, where he earned his medical degree. He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Islamic Hospital in Amman, ultimately being selected to serve as chief resident, a role typically reserved for standout trainees who take on added teaching and administrative responsibilities within a residency program.
From there, Dr. Ikrai pursued advanced training in the United States, completing a nephrology fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before undertaking a specialized transplant nephrology fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, one of the nation’s leading centers for transplant medicine. Over the course of that training, he built extensive clinical experience treating patients with acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, and the complex medical needs that follow a kidney transplant.
Research Focused on Equity in Transplant Access
Dr. Ikrai’s academic interests center on glomerular diseases (conditions that damage the kidney’s filtering units), kidney transplantation, and health equity in medical care. That research focus recently earned him recognition on a national stage: at the 2026 American Transplant Congress, he received a Poster of Distinction for research examining race-neutral eGFR calculations. The eGFR, or estimated glomerular filtration rate, is a standard lab measurement used to gauge how well the kidneys are functioning, and the formulas historically used to calculate it have come under scrutiny in recent years for producing results that disadvantaged Black patients. Dr. Ikrai’s research examined how race-neutral versions of that calculation could help reduce disparities in transplant access for African American patients.
The shift Dr. Ikrai studied has already reshaped transplant policy. In 2021, a joint task force of the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology recommended that labs adopt a new eGFR equation that does not use race, and in 2022 the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network required transplant programs to use race-neutral calculations when listing kidney candidates. The following year, the network directed programs to review the records of Black patients already on the waiting list and restore waiting time they had lost to the older formula.
A Track Record of Humanitarian Work
Outside the clinic, Dr. Ikrai has a history of volunteer medical service. He previously worked with outreach teams in Jordan that provided free healthcare to displaced refugees, and he has taken part in community programs aimed at supporting vulnerable populations.
