The University of South Alabama’s College of Engineering is celebrating a standout showing in this year’s Tau Beta Pi scholarship competition, with nine seniors selected as scholars — more than double the total claimed by any other university in the state.
No other Alabama institution placed more than two students among the national honor, making South Alabama’s contingent the largest in the state by a wide margin and the second-largest university representation nationally. Only 261 students were chosen nationwide from among 244 collegiate chapters of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society.
College of Engineering Dean Dr. John Steadman called the showing “a wonderful tribute” to both the students and the university’s Alabama Epsilon Chapter, noting that the scholarships are awarded competitively based on academic performance, campus leadership and service, along with promise for future contributions to the engineering profession.
Each of the nine recipients will receive a $2,000 cash award to support their final year of engineering study. The scholars represent a range of engineering disciplines, including chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering, and come from a mix of hometowns spanning South Alabama and beyond.
Among the honorees are students from Satsuma and Mobile alongside classmates from Mississippi, Florida, Washington state and Oregon, reflecting the university’s ability to draw engineering talent from well outside the immediate Gulf Coast region even as it builds a strong local pipeline of student achievement.
University officials say the recognition reflects sustained investment in the engineering program over recent years, as South Alabama has worked to expand research opportunities and faculty mentorship available to undergraduates. Consistently strong showings in national honor society competitions, they say, have become a point of pride for a college that competes directly with larger, more heavily funded engineering programs elsewhere in the state.
The recognition adds to a growing list of academic honors for the university’s engineering college, which has increasingly positioned itself as a competitive option for prospective students weighing engineering programs across Alabama and the broader Gulf South region.
