Alabama state troopers have identified a Loxley man who died in a motorcycle crash on a Baldwin County road last Friday while being pursued by police.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said James C. Thompson Jr., 51, was riding a 1988 Honda Shadow motorcycle when he crashed on Black Devine Road near the intersection with Railroad Avenue on Friday, July 3. ALEA announced his identity the following Wednesday evening, after the Department of Forensic Sciences confirmed it.
What troopers say happened
According to ALEA’s press release, Thompson was attempting to flee Robertsdale police officers near the Railroad Avenue intersection when, at about 4:08 p.m., he struck a trailer being towed by a 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck. The truck was driven by Donald Pierce, 61, also of Loxley.
“Thompson was not immediately identified on scene, however, was pronounced deceased,” ALEA said. “Thompson’s body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science, where his identity was later determined and confirmed.”
The agency said the crash remains under investigation and that no other information would be released at this time.
Open questions about the pursuit
A Robertsdale Police Department spokesperson did not respond to a request for information about the chase, leaving several questions unanswered: why officers attempted to stop Thompson, how fast the pursuit reached, and whether department policy on pursuits was followed.
Pursuit policies have drawn increased scrutiny across Alabama and nationally, as agencies balance the need to apprehend suspects against the danger high-speed chases pose to officers, suspects and bystanders. Friday’s crash occurred on a two-lane road in a rapidly growing corridor of central Baldwin County, where Loxley, Robertsdale and Summerdale have all seen heavy residential and commercial growth.
The toll on Baldwin County roads
The wreck adds to a string of fatal motorcycle crashes on Baldwin County roads in recent years. Motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable users of the county’s fast-growing highway network, where mixing rural two-lane roads with rapidly increasing traffic has proven deadly.
ALEA encourages all riders to wear Department of Transportation-approved helmets and protective gear, and reminds drivers to watch carefully for motorcycles, particularly at intersections and during peak summer riding season.
