FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Eastern Shore Art Center is hosting Art of the Paw on Saturday, Sept. 19, from noon to 4 p.m.
The community is invited to engage in creativity and education during the celebration of pets.
What’s Included
The afternoon combines a free adoption event with the Baldwin Humane Society and a slate of art and education activities:
- A free adoption event with the Baldwin Humane Society

- Make-and-take art projects

Why an Art Center Hosts an Adoption Event
Pairing adoptions with an arts program is a deliberate strategy rather than an odd combination. Adoption events held at shelters reach people who have already decided to adopt. An event at a well-trafficked community venue reaches people who came for something else — and a meaningful share of adoptions begin that way.
The Eastern Shore Art Center sits in downtown Fairhope, a district with steady weekend foot traffic. For a rescue organization, that exposure is difficult to replicate.
Before You Adopt
Adoption events move quickly, and animal welfare groups generally encourage prospective adopters to think through a few things in advance rather than in the moment:
- Whether a landlord or HOA permits the animal, and any size or breed restrictions
- Who will care for the animal during work hours and travel
- The ongoing cost — food, routine veterinary care, preventatives and the possibility of unexpected medical expense
- How an existing pet at home is likely to respond
- The realistic lifespan commitment, which for a dog or cat is frequently 12 to 18 years
Rescue organizations would generally rather a potential adopter walk away and return next month than adopt on impulse and return the animal.
Live Pet Portraits
The live pet portrait element gives attendees something to take home that is not an animal. Artists working from a photograph or from the pet itself produce work on the spot, and events of this kind are a practical way for local artists to reach buyers directly.
The Educational Vendors
Hollywood Feed and Thompson Animal Hospital are attending as educational vendors rather than purely commercial ones. Veterinary practices at community events typically field questions people hesitate to book an appointment over — nutrition, preventatives, dental care, behavior — which is useful for owners and builds a relationship a practice benefits from later.
