Main Street Atmore is coming home from Enterprise with two pieces of hardware. The local downtown revitalization organization announced this week that it received a pair of recognitions during the 13th annual Main Street Alabama awards of excellence celebration, one honoring an individual champion of downtown Atmore and the other recognizing a wide-ranging partnership that is helping chart the city’s future.
The honors continue a strong run for the Escambia County community, which has spent the past year turning a collaborative planning effort into visible momentum along its historic commercial corridors.
A Main Street Hero in Atmore
Sydney McGhee was named Main Street Atmore’s 2026 Main Street Hero at the celebration. Organization officials described McGhee as a fixture of the downtown effort, pointing to years of support, investment and volunteer work on behalf of the city’s core.
“A longtime supporter, investor, volunteer and advocate for our downtown, Sydney brings professionalism, strategic thinking and a genuine love for Atmore to everything she does,” Main Street Atmore officials said in announcing the award. “Her leadership, integrity and commitment to our community continue to make a difference, and we could not think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.”
The Main Street Hero designation is reserved for people whose behind-the-scenes work keeps a local program moving — the committee members, donors and advocates whose contributions rarely make headlines but shape what downtown looks like on the ground.
All Aboard Atmore! Takes Home Excellence Award
The second recognition went to All Aboard Atmore!, which earned an excellence award in the public/private partnership category. The project brought together Auburn University, Main Street Atmore, the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Atmore to develop a strategic redevelopment plan and a new long-term vision for downtown Atmore.
Since the plan was introduced in late 2025, officials said, it has become much more than a document sitting on a shelf. Instead, they said it is functioning as a roadmap for action — helping guide projects, partnerships, grant opportunities and private investment that are moving downtown Atmore forward.
Collaborations of that kind are a hallmark of the Main Street approach, which pairs university planning resources and municipal government with the local businesses and volunteers who do the day-to-day work of revitalization. The award recognizes not just the finished plan but the structure that produced it: public agencies, higher education and the private sector pulling in the same direction.

The awards of excellence celebration is Main Street Alabama’s annual showcase, honoring outstanding people, projects and partnerships across its network of designated communities.
