B-Bob’s, a downtown Mobile nightclub that has served the Gulf Coast’s LGBTQ community for more than three decades, is on the market as its founder prepares to retire.
Jerry Ehlen opened the bar in West Mobile more than 30 years ago before relocating to downtown Mobile when the area was still struggling. As the district evolved around it, B-Bob’s grew into a regional destination and a safe haven for members of the community.
A Future That Looks Much Like Its Past
Ehlen says he expects the venue to carry on its original mission under new ownership. He has spoken with several prospective buyers and says each has expressed interest in keeping B-Bob’s exactly as it is — an LGBTQ space, a safe space, and an entertainment venue.
“I’ve been doing this in Mobile for over 33 years — October will be 34 years,” Ehlen said, explaining that after so long he simply wants time to relax. There is no deadline attached to the sale, and the nightclub will continue operating as usual in the meantime.
