The July 2021 call
On the evening of Sunday, July 25, 2021, Barkley’s wife called Auburn police and asked for assistance. She told police her husband was intoxicated, had a gun in his shirt pocket, and that she was afraid he might hurt himself. Barkley was not aware she had called police.
Officers who arrived were told that four children were inside the home. Within a few minutes, an officer fired 10 times through the door and a slight opening, seriously wounding Barkley. Barkley fired two shots inside the house. After he was wounded, Barkley made a phone call seeking medical assistance.
The call for help was later classified as domestic violence.
