BREWTON, Ala. — The biggest week of the high school football season in Escambia County has arrived. The 84th Battle of Murder Creek kicks off Friday night when the T.R. Miller Tigers host the W.S. Neal Eagles at Brewton Municipal Stadium, with a region championship and playoff seeding hanging in the balance.

Gates open at 5 p.m., and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The rivalry takes its name from Murder Creek, the waterway that separates Brewton, home of T.R. Miller, from East Brewton, home of W.S. Neal. Each fall, the game draws students, alumni and families from both sides of the creek.

Region title and top seed on the line

Both teams have already clinched spots in the state playoffs, so Friday’s game will not decide whether either team advances. It will decide where each team plays and who gets the more favorable path.

The winner will finish ahead of Jackson and claim the Region 1 championship, earning the No. 1 seed from the region and home-field advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

The loser will slide to the No. 3 seed and will have to go on the road for its first-round playoff game.

The two teams enter the week dead even in region play, each with a 5-1 record. W.S. Neal is 6-3 overall, while T.R. Miller is 7-2.

Common opponents offer few clues

Looking at shared opponents does little to separate the rivals. Both teams faced Jackson and Opp this season, and the results were mirror images.

  • T.R. Miller defeated Jackson but lost to Opp.
  • W.S. Neal lost to Jackson but defeated Opp.

That split is part of what has created the three-way picture at the top of Region 1, with Friday’s winner moving past Jackson for the top spot.

A series that dates to 1946

T.R. Miller holds a 59-24 lead in the all-time series, with no ties, entering this year’s game.

The rivals first met on Nov. 22, 1946, when T.R. Miller won the inaugural battle 25-0. Over the decades since, the Tigers have held the upper hand more often than not.

T.R. Miller owns the longest winning streak in the series, a run of 12 consecutive victories from 1986 to 1996. W.S. Neal’s best stretch came from 1959 to 1965, when the Eagles won seven straight.

Lopsided wins and shutouts

The most lopsided result in the rivalry belongs to T.R. Miller, which beat W.S. Neal 55-0 in 2008.

W.S. Neal has notched shutout victories of its own. The Eagles blanked the Tigers in 1949, and they did it again last season, winning the 2025 meeting 21-0. That result gives W.S. Neal the momentum of the most recent win heading into Friday, while T.R. Miller will be playing at home.

The 1995 and 1996 seasons

Only once in the history of the series have both teams entered the game undefeated. That happened in 1995, when T.R. Miller won a tight regular-season game 18-14. The teams met again later that year in the Class 4A state semifinals, and T.R. Miller won again, 34-14.

The 1996 season brought another chapter. W.S. Neal snapped T.R. Miller’s 12-game winning streak in the regular season with a 36-14 victory. The Tigers answered when it mattered most, beating the Eagles 16-14 in the state semifinals.

Those back-to-back seasons, with four meetings in two years and two of them in the playoffs, remain among the most memorable stretches in the rivalry’s history.

Rivalry week in Brewton and East Brewton

Students, faculty, staff and supporters at both schools are taking part in a range of activities throughout the week as anticipation builds toward Friday night.

Fans planning to attend should arrive early. With gates opening at 5 p.m. and the game carrying region title and seeding implications, a large crowd is expected at Brewton Municipal Stadium. The game will settle bragging rights in the “BOMC” for another year and set the stage for each team’s playoff run.
