Cardiology Associates Brings GE HealthCare Revolution Apex CT to Mobile for Faster, Clearer Heart Imaging
Cardiology Associates has added a GE HealthCare Revolution Apex CT upgrade in Mobile, offering faster, clearer heart imaging for Gulf Coast patients, including those with high heart rates, irregular rhythms or heavy coronary calcium.
MOBILE, Ala. — Cardiology Associates has added a GE HealthCare Revolution Apex CT upgrade at its Mobile location, expanding access to advanced cardiac imaging for patients across the Gulf Coast, the practice announced Friday.
The new computed tomography system is designed to produce fast, detailed pictures of the heart and blood vessels, including in patients whose hearts can be difficult to image with older equipment. The practice said the upgrade strengthens its ability to deliver high-quality cardiac imaging close to home.
The Mobile addition comes on the heels of another imaging milestone for the practice earlier this year in Baldwin County, where Cardiology Associates installed a GE HealthCare Revolution Vibe CT in Fairhope.
What the Revolution Apex CT Is Designed to Do
According to Cardiology Associates, the Revolution Apex platform offers patients several benefits. The system is designed to support:
- Clearer images of the heart and blood vessels
- Faster scan times
- High-quality imaging even in more challenging cases
- Improved visualization of coronary arteries and other vascular structures
- Reduced motion-related image problems
- More efficient cardiac exams
The practice said the platform’s high-definition imaging can help physicians evaluate narrowing of the arteries and other cardiovascular concerns in greater detail.
Why Some Patients Are Harder to Scan
Imaging the heart presents a challenge that imaging most other organs does not: the heart never stops moving. Each heartbeat causes the heart muscle and the coronary arteries on its surface to shift, and that movement can blur images if the scanner cannot capture the picture quickly enough.
Cardiology Associates said the Revolution Apex system is built to deliver high-quality images in several situations that traditionally make cardiac CT more difficult, including patients with:
- Higher heart rates
- Irregular heart rhythms
- Significant coronary calcium
A faster heart rate gives a scanner less time between beats to capture a still image. Irregular rhythms make the timing of each beat less predictable. And heavy deposits of calcium in the coronary arteries, which are common in people with long-standing atherosclerosis, can create bright spots on CT images that make it harder to judge how narrow an artery really is.
The practice also noted that the system’s design to reduce motion-related problems can be especially helpful for patients who may have trouble holding their breath or keeping a steady heart rhythm during a scan. Breathing and other movement during an exam can degrade image quality, so patients who struggle to stay still have historically been among the hardest to image well.
How Cardiac CT Fits Into Heart Care
Computed tomography uses X-rays and computer processing to create cross-sectional images of the body. In cardiology, CT is commonly used to look at the coronary arteries, the vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle.
One widely used exam is coronary CT angiography, in which a contrast dye is injected into a vein and the scanner captures detailed images of the coronary arteries. Physicians use it to look for plaque buildup and narrowing that can reduce blood flow to the heart. Another common test, coronary calcium scoring, measures the amount of calcified plaque in the arteries and can help doctors gauge a patient’s risk of future heart problems.
Because cardiac CT is noninvasive, it can give physicians valuable information without the catheter-based procedures traditionally used to examine the coronary arteries. Clearer, more reliable images can help doctors decide which patients need further testing or treatment and which do not.
Building on the Fairhope Installation
The Mobile upgrade follows what Cardiology Associates described as a major imaging milestone earlier this year. The practice said it became the first private cardiology practice in the United States to install GE HealthCare’s Revolution Vibe CT, which it placed at its Fairhope location.
With the Revolution Apex now in Mobile and the Revolution Vibe in Fairhope, the practice has added advanced CT technology on both sides of Mobile Bay within the same year, giving patients in Mobile and Baldwin counties options closer to where they live.
What It Means for Patients
For patients across the region, the practice said the upgrade is intended to bring faster, more detailed heart imaging close to home. Shorter scan times can make exams more comfortable, and better image quality can reduce the chance that a patient needs additional testing because the first images were unclear.
Patients who have been told they need a cardiac CT, or who have questions about whether imaging is right for them, should talk with their cardiologist or primary care physician. Decisions about which test to use depend on each patient’s symptoms, medical history and risk factors.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and Alabama has consistently ranked among the states with the highest rates of cardiovascular death. Access to modern diagnostic tools is one piece of the effort to identify heart disease earlier and treat it more effectively.
Preparing for a Cardiac CT Scan
Patients scheduled for a cardiac CT usually receive specific instructions from their care team ahead of time. Those can cover whether to avoid caffeine or food before the exam, which medications to take or hold, and whether the scan will use contrast dye. Patients with kidney problems or a history of reactions to contrast should make sure their physician knows before the test.
The scan itself is typically quick. Patients lie on a table that moves through the opening of the scanner while technologists monitor the heart rhythm and give breathing instructions. Following each center’s instructions closely helps produce the best possible images.
About Cardiology Associates
Cardiology Associates is a private cardiology practice serving patients in Mobile, Baldwin County and the surrounding Gulf Coast region, with locations that include Mobile and Fairhope. The practice provides diagnostic testing and treatment for a range of heart and vascular conditions.
The addition of the Revolution Apex CT is the latest step in the practice’s effort to expand access to advanced cardiovascular imaging for patients throughout the region.
