The Carnival Sensation pulled into its new homeport Friday morning, docking at the Alabama Cruise Terminal around 8:30 a.m. in the ship’s first-ever visit to Mobile — and the first time a Carnival cruise ship has returned to the Port City since the pandemic halted sailing the year before.
Despite the milestone arrival, would-be cruisers shouldn’t pack their bags just yet. City officials made clear that passenger sailings were not resuming with the ship’s arrival.
A visit for vaccinations, not vacationers
According to the city of Mobile, the Sensation is in port so that the 110 crew members aboard can be vaccinated by USA Health, a step toward eventually returning the vessel to service.
The ship relocated from Miami to Mobile under a plan announced in 2020 that put it in place of the retired Carnival Fantasy and Fascination on Mobile itineraries. Its quiet first docking marked a small but visible sign of life for an industry that had been idle from Mobile’s terminal since early 2020, with cruises potentially able to resume as early as July if conditions allowed.
