Downtown Mobile Apartment Fire Displaced 17 People in 2008

James Bullard, March 28, 2008

Originally reported March 28, 2008.

Seventeen people were left without homes after a fire moved through the Garden District Apartments at 1051 Government St. in downtown Mobile in March 2008, according to an archived WKRG report.

The fire began shortly after 4 p.m. Mobile Fire Department official Steve Huffman said flames spread into the attic, prompting firefighters to withdraw from the building and fight the blaze from outside.

Residents evacuated as firefighters checked that no one remained inside. Investigators believed the fire began in an electrical appliance in a third-floor apartment.

All tenants escaped safely. The American Red Cross was working to find temporary housing after 12 apartments were damaged, nine of them occupied.
