The Fairhope City Council's agenda includes resolutions on buying school board property including the K-1 Center, dredging Fly Creek and requesting a special school tax election.
FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope City Council’s agenda includes resolutions on a K-1 Center purchase from the Baldwin County Board of Education, a dredging contract for Fly Creek and a request for a special school tax election.
School Board Properties
One resolution would authorize Mayor Karin Wilson or Council President Jack Burrell, on behalf of the city, to buy properties owned by the Baldwin County Board of Education known as the K-1 Center, Fairhopers Community Park and the James P. Nix Center. The resolution would also authorize them to negotiate and sign all documents needed to close the purchase under the executed land purchase contract.
This is the city’s second attempt to buy the K-1 Center; an earlier attempt did not succeed. The council has said it will hold public hearings.
The agenda also includes an executive session to discuss what the city is willing to offer or accept for the purchase, sale, exchange or lease of real property, or its market value.
Fly Creek Dredging
Another resolution would authorize the mayor to sign a memorandum of understanding between M&N of Alabama LLC and the city for dredging the main channel of Fly Creek, and to sign the contract for Bid No. 008-19. The contract, about $500,000, is to be split between the city and the Fairhope Yacht Club.
School Tax Election Request
The council is also considering a resolution to file a request with the Baldwin County Board of Education for a special 3-mill ad valorem school district tax election. Burrell has said he “wants out of the school business.” The mayor had proposed an alternative funding approach that did not involve a tax.
Library Repairs
A fourth resolution would authorize the mayor to sign Change Order No. 2 to Bid No. 005-18, Library Envelope Repairs 2019, awarded to MW Rogers Construction Co. LLC. The change order adds 12 calendar days, extending the contract from 210 to 222 days, for miscellaneous repairs needed because of conditions found during demolition. The Fairhope Public Library has been closed for several weeks for the work.
