FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope City Council has voted to extend the sunset clause for the Fly Creek Apartments project, giving the developer another 120 days to obtain approval of a multiple occupancy site plan.
The Vote
Four council members voted in favor of the extension.
Residents packed the council chambers to speak on the project. It was the 10th time residents have turned out to address the council on the Fly Creek Apartments.
Three council members said they had labored over the decision, and some cited fairness as a factor in their votes.
Before the vote, Councilman Robert Brown spoke about his long relationship with developer Arthur Corte.
Mayor’s Position
Mayor Karin Wilson has opposed the project from the start.
Background
The apartment development, proposed near Fly Creek, has drawn sustained opposition from residents, and a group called Friends of Fly Creek has challenged the project’s approval in court.
