Mobile Baykeeper Outlines Water Testing Plan as Residents Raise Fly Creek Watershed Concerns
Mobile Baykeeper presented a plan to the Fairhope City Council to test water at 12 locations weekly for 12 weeks, including in the Fly Creek watershed.
FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Mobile Baykeeper presented a plan to the Fairhope City Council at its Oct. 9 meeting to test water at 12 locations once a week for 12 weeks, with the Fly Creek watershed among the sites.
Limits on Testing
Testing in the Fly Creek watershed may be limited to certain locations because landowner Arthur Corte has declined to allow testing on his property.
Resident Concerns
During the public participation portion of the meeting, a resident of the Sandy Ford and Rock Creek area presented photographs of wetlands near the Firefly subdivision, which is also in the Fly Creek watershed. She said she and other neighbors had noticed foul odors and discolored water that appeared to be contaminated.
City sewer lift stations in the same area have also had problems.
Baykeeper representatives received copies of the photographs and said they were familiar with the location.
Regional Sewer Issues
The presentation comes amid public attention to sewer systems in Fairhope, Daphne and Spanish Fort, where sewer spills have continued to occur. Apartments have been proposed for construction along the banks of Fly Creek.
