The historic Malaga Inn in downtown Mobile has long been the subject of haunting tales, and a locally filmed video has given ghost enthusiasts something new to argue about. In the footage, shot in late summer 2010, staff member Vonnie McMillan Jamison recounts some of the reported hauntings associated with the landmark inn.
The filmmakers say they were astonished by what they found when reviewing the tape: a fleeting shadow that they insist they neither created nor added through special effects. Viewers are directed to watch closely as the door to the inn’s tunnel swings open — at that moment, a shadow appears to dart rapidly across it.
Whether the dark shape was a trick of light, a passing object or something harder to explain is left to the audience. For a city with as many layers of history as Mobile, stories of the unexplained remain part of the charm of its oldest buildings — and the Malaga Inn’s ghost lore shows no sign of fading.
