Nashville’s Great Peacock returned to Callaghan’s Irish Social Club on Saturday, March 8, with Mobile’s own The Volks kicking off the night. Doors opened at 7:30 p.m. and the cover was just $8 for the Oakleigh District room.
Great Peacock had been steadily building a Gulf Coast following since its first SouthSounds Music Festival appearance, and the band’s blend of big-chorus country rock made it a natural fit for the club’s stage.
The Volks gave the hometown crowd a reason to arrive early. The Mobile garage-rock outfit had been generating buzz around the city with a classic, raw-edged sound, and their opening set was billed as a glimpse into one of the local scene’s hardest-working bands.
The show also set up a busy stretch at Callaghan’s: Robert Ellis with Steelism and Johnny Fritz followed on Monday, March 11, and the club capped the month with a St. Patrick’s Day celebration featuring St. Paul and The Broken Bones with Kansas Bible Company on Saturday, March 15.
