Grits & Greens Serve Up Southern Rock at The Brickyard on Dauphin Street
Husband-and-wife band Grits & Greens play The Brickyard on Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile Thursday, Sept. 23 at 10 p.m.
A husband-and-wife musical partnership that started as an acoustic act and grew into a full-throttle Southern rock band rolls into downtown Mobile this week. Grits & Greens take the stage at The Brickyard, 266 Dauphin St., on Thursday, Sept. 23, with the music set to start at 10 p.m. Fans can call the venue at 251-219-6488 for ticket details.
The group began with married duo Ryann McGhee on guitar and vocals and Jesse McGhee on guitar and vocals. As the couple’s songwriting drifted from stripped-down acoustic material toward rock, they expanded the lineup, bringing in Adrian Chambers on drums and Clark Castle on bass.
The band’s original catalog draws comparisons to the Allman Brothers and Susan Tedeschi with a dose of Widespread Panic’s improvisational spirit. “Slingshot” rides a driving Southern rock groove beneath Ryann McGhee’s bright vocal delivery, while “Fleas” gives Jesse McGhee room to stretch out on lead guitar, pairing bouncing rhythms with long, dreamy slides that are as melodic as they are hypnotic.
With a rhythm section now behind them and a live setting built for improvisation, the band’s Brickyard show figures to lean into the jam-friendly side of their repertoire.
