MOBILE, Ala. — Local students will get a firsthand look at what their futures could hold next week when the Gulf Coast Challenge brings colleges, universities and career representatives together under one roof at the Mobile Convention Center.
The MAWSS College and Career Fair Presented by Spire Powered by Novelis will take place Thursday, Oct. 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mobile Convention Center. The fair is part of the Gulf Coast Challenge, powered by the Mobile Sports Authority, a week of events celebrating HBCU culture, education, athletics and community.

‘Their future is bigger than what they see around them today’
For Gulf Coast Challenge CEO Charly Duke, the goal is about more than handing students brochures. It is about helping them see themselves in opportunities they may never have considered.
“We want our young people to understand that their future is bigger than what they see around them today,” Duke said. “This experience gives them an opportunity to meet people, ask questions and see firsthand the possibilities that are available to them. Whether a student is thinking about college, a career, an internship or another path, we want them to leave inspired and knowing that there are people and opportunities waiting for them.”
Celebrating HBCU culture and opportunity
The College & Career Fair is a key part of the Gulf Coast Challenge, which celebrates HBCU culture, education, athletics and community throughout its week of events. The fair gives students a chance to experience the HBCU community and to learn more about institutions that can help shape their academic and professional futures.
Historically Black colleges and universities have a long and proud tradition of educating leaders in every field, from education and medicine to business, law, engineering and the arts. For many students, meeting HBCU representatives in person can open doors to schools they may not have known much about, along with information about academic programs, campus life, scholarships and financial aid.
Alabama is home to more HBCUs than most states, and Mobile is home to Bishop State Community College, one of the state’s historically Black institutions, which makes an event like this one especially meaningful for local families.
Local employers invest in the next generation
The fair’s presenting partners reflect the involvement of major regional employers and utilities. The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System, known as MAWSS, is the title sponsor, with Spire and Novelis also supporting the event. Employers like these depend on a steady pipeline of skilled workers, from engineers and technicians to operators, tradespeople and office professionals, and career fairs are one way they introduce students to the jobs available close to home.
For students who are not sure whether college is the right next step, the fair also offers a chance to learn about careers, apprenticeships and other paths that begin right after high school.
