Gulf Shores Airport Terminal Project Lands $2.5 Million State Grant

Gulf Shores International Airport, also known as Jack Edwards Field, is receiving a major boost toward its ongoing terminal upgrades after the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) approved a $2.5 million grant for construction work at the facility. The award is the largest of several airport improvement grants ALDOT announced this week as part of a statewide funding round totaling more than $3.1 million.

The money will go toward Terminal 1.0 construction as well as a related Qualified Technical Assistance (QTA) state grant project at the Baldwin County airport. The Airport Authority of the City of Gulf Shores is serving as the sponsor for the project, meaning it will oversee how the state dollars are put to use on site.

Part of a Larger Statewide Investment

The Gulf Shores award comes through ALDOT’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program, a state initiative that provides both financial assistance and technical support to public-use airports across Alabama. According to ALDOT, the program funds a wide range of work, including land acquisition, runway upgrades, facility repairs, routine maintenance and other operational improvements at airports large and small.

With this latest round, ALDOT’s total airport improvement funding for 2026 now stands at $5,336,018. Beyond Gulf Shores, the agency also awarded grants for projects at other Alabama airports, including runway rehabilitation, lighting upgrades, hangar development, apron expansions and perimeter fencing — underscoring how widespread the need for aviation infrastructure investment is across the state.

State Officials Emphasize Safety and Reliability

Frank Farmer, bureau chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau, framed the funding as part of a broader commitment to keeping Alabama’s airports safe and functional for the people and businesses that rely on them. “Safe, reliable airport facilities require continued investment,” Farmer said in ALDOT’s announcement. “These grants will help local airports address important needs and maintain facilities that pilots, businesses and communities can depend on.”

ALDOT officials also noted that the grants reflect the department’s continued investment in the state’s aviation system as a whole, which they say plays a role in supporting emergency response capabilities, commerce, tourism and other transportation needs throughout Alabama.

Context for Gulf Shores’ Growing Airport

The new grant arrives as Gulf Shores International Airport continues to expand its terminal facilities to keep pace with growth along the Alabama Gulf Coast. The airport’s alternate name honors Jack Edwards, a Mobile Republican who represented Alabama’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House from 1965 to 1985.

Looking Ahead

ALDOT indicated that planning for its fiscal year 2027 Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program is already underway, suggesting additional rounds of funding could be available for future phases of the Gulf Shores terminal project or other aviation needs in Baldwin County. For now, the $2.5 million award gives the airport authority a significant piece of the funding puzzle needed to keep the terminal project on track.
