Gunfire Strikes Homes Across Mobile Over Holiday Weekend; No One Hurt
Mobile police reported bullet holes in homes on East Street, Wormeley Drive, Wells Avenue and Linwood Drive over the holiday weekend. No injuries.
At least five Mobile homes and a car were hit by gunfire in a string of shootings reported over the weekend after Thanksgiving, though police said no one was injured in any of them.
The trouble started early Saturday. Around 12:20 a.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of East Street, where they found bullet holes in a home. Thirty-four minutes later they were at the 1600 block of Wormeley Drive — another house struck by shots. By 2:30 a.m., crews were on the 2000 block of Wells Avenue, where gunfire had hit two separate homes.
Each of the Saturday incidents ended the same way in the police department’s weekend recap: no one was injured, and the investigations remain ongoing.
The quiet didn’t last through the holiday. At 3:40 a.m. Monday, Mobile police were called to the 1300 block of Linwood Drive, where a home and a parked car had both been shot. Again, no injuries were reported.
The weekend spree fits a pattern city officials have already acknowledged. In October, Mobile Director of Public Safety Lawrence Battiste said the city was seeing an increase in violent crime, noting that in most cases the victims know who is shooting at their homes and cars.
What the law says
Under Alabama law, firing a gun into an occupied home or vehicle is a Class B felony, punishable by two to 20 years in prison. Shooting into an unoccupied home, building or vehicle is a Class C felony.
