DAPHNE, Ala. — Daphne attorney Harry Still III has announced his candidacy for Alabama attorney general, asking voters for their support in the May 24 Republican primary, according to a press release from his campaign.
Candidate Background
Still described himself as a “practical Republican” and said he wants to “restore your faith in Alabama justice.” He said he has spent three decades practicing law in city and county government settings and in courthouses throughout Alabama. According to the release, Still is an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Auburn University, Troy State University and the Birmingham School of Law.
Campaign Platform
Still said he wants to keep violent offenders in Alabama prisons. The release lists a series of campaign promises, including:
- Taking a leadership role in prison construction and improvements.
- Reforming law enforcement from the top down, including reorganizing the Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission (APOST), providing “sensory training” statewide and supplying non-lethal equipment to all departments in the state.
- Designating a “Go-Team” to investigate every officer-involved shooting in Alabama, rather than having departments’ own major crimes or internal affairs units investigate shootings within their departments.
- Bolstering the attorney general’s Public Integrity Unit and reviewing every complaint filed with the Alabama Ethics Commission since 2015, as well as all new complaints.
- Investigating local law enforcement’s use of software called a “Master Name Index,” which Still said may violate citizens’ constitutional rights.
- Releasing all recordings of former Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard’s calls to legislators about shortening his prison sentence. According to the release, the calls were made on a state telephone in a county jail subject to recording, and Hubbard was advised of that fact.
- Taking a leadership position on medical cannabis licensing.
- Creating a gaming commission with appointed officials if Alabama voters choose to permit gaming or a lottery.
- Taking a leadership role in replacing the state constitution, supporting home rule for county government and reforming the Court of the Judiciary.
- Investigating unregulated private sewer utilities in Alabama.
- Championing the Alabama Accountability and Transparency Act and reviewing all no-bid state contracts.
- Supporting the right of citizens who are not otherwise prohibited by law to carry a concealed firearm without a permit from their local sheriff.
