The Band Perry, a country music trio made up of siblings who grew up in Mobile, is set to release its self-titled debut album on Oct. 12, marking a milestone for a group that started out performing together as kids.
The band is fronted by Kimberly Perry on lead vocals, rhythm guitar and piano, alongside her brothers Reid Perry on bass guitar and background vocals and Neil Perry on mandolin, drums, accordion and background vocals. The three began singing together in Mobile, with Kimberly first performing in her own band as a teenager while Neil and Reid worked as roadies before joining her onstage. By 2005, the siblings were touring together as part of a New Faces of Country showcase.
From Mobile Stages to a Nashville Label
The band’s break came in 2008, when Garth Brooks’ manager, Bob Doyle, discovered the group and helped arrange studio recordings. Those recordings made their way to Scott Borchetta, who had just launched the Republic Nashville label, and The Band Perry signed with the label in August 2009.
The group released its first single, “Hip to My Heart,” that same month; the song climbed to No. 20 on the country charts in mid-2010, followed by a self-titled EP that April. Its follow-up single, “If I Die Young,” written by Kimberly Perry, has also cracked the U.S. country Top 40. Both songs anchor the band’s debut full-length album.
For Mobile audiences who watched the Perry siblings come up performing locally, the Oct. 12 release marks the next step for a band with deep South Alabama roots now finding a national country audience.
