As Mobile students, teachers and school staff prepare to head back to class, City Councilman Cory Penn is inviting the community to join him for a Prayer Walk for Our Schools and Our City.
The community-wide event is set for Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 6 p.m. at Frederick D. Richardson Jr. Tricentennial Park, 2121 Bragg Avenue in Mobile. With students returning to class on Monday, August 10, organizers say the walk will give residents a chance to unite in prayer for a safe, successful and productive school year.
Participants are expected to pray for students, teachers, administrators, school employees, parents, first responders, elected officials and the broader community as the new school year begins.
“Before we send our children back into the classroom, let’s come together as one community to seek God’s guidance, protection, wisdom, and peace,” Penn said. “Prayer has the power to bring hope, strengthen families, and unite our city. Everyone is welcome to join us as we lift up our schools and our community.”

The Prayer Walk for Our Schools and Our City is open to the public and free to attend. Families, churches, neighborhood organizations, educators, students and community leaders are all encouraged to take part.

Organizers are encouraging attendees to invite family, friends, neighbors and fellow church members to join the gathering, which comes as districts across the region finalize preparations for the first week of classes.
Update: Penn Describes the Walk’s Purpose
Ahead of the walk at Frederick D. Richardson Jr. Tricentennial Park, District 1 Councilman Cory Penn described the second annual Community Prayer Walk as organized around the theme “One City, One Walk, One Prayer,” with a focus on asking for protection, peace and wisdom over children, families, public safety and the city of Mobile.
Penn said the event carries significance well beyond the school calendar.
“We’re praying over our teachers, our students, that the atmosphere is conducive for them to learn and we declare, Lord, that the grades will be up and they will perform academically at the level that they desire,” Penn said. “Great behavior, no issues in the school. That’s what we’re looking forward to and we just want to come in agreement with the teachers, the administration, with the school system.”
