Children operating a small sales stand with handmade goodsChildren ages 5 to 17 can sell products and pitch business ideas at Mobile's September showcase.

MOBILE, Ala. — The City of Mobile Events team will host Kid’s Day: Young Entrepreneur Showcase on Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf.

The event gives children ages 5 to 17 a venue to sell handmade products, offer professional services and present business ideas to the public. Participants ages 14 to 17 can also apply for additional opportunities beyond the showcase itself.

Why events like this matter

A child who has to price a product, count inventory, greet a stranger and explain what they made learns several things that are difficult to teach in a classroom. Chief among them is the direct relationship between preparation and outcome — a lesson that lands considerably harder when the table beside yours is busier than your own.

The age range is broad by design. A five-year-old selling friendship bracelets and a sixteen-year-old offering lawn care or graphic design are engaged in fundamentally similar work, scaled to their capacity. The additional opportunities available to older participants suggest organizers see the showcase as an entry point rather than a one-day activity.

A fitting venue

The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf sits at the center of Mobile’s downtown waterfront district, a location that carries its own commercial history. A city built on port commerce hosting its youngest merchants in a maritime museum is a reasonably neat piece of symmetry.
