FOLEY, Ala. — Public works crews from across the Gulf Coast will converge on Foley next month for a competition that puts the region’s excavator, bulldozer and skid steer operators head to head. The Gulf Coast Heavy Equipment Roadeo is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25, at OWA Parks and Resort, with activities running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. OWA is also a sponsor. As of the city’s announcement, more than 20 cities and other agencies had already registered to compete.
The competition
Competitors will face challenges built around the skills they use on the job every day. Events will feature mini-excavators, bulldozers, full-size excavators and skid steers — the compact tracked machines fitted with blades similar to those of a forklift. Scoring emphasizes accuracy, control and technical ability rather than raw speed, which makes the competition considerably more interesting to watch than the equipment list might suggest.
Anyone who has watched a skilled operator place a bucket within an inch of a target will recognize what is actually being tested here: fine motor control exercised through several tons of hydraulic machinery.
Recognition for work that rarely gets any
Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the event offers public employees a moment in the spotlight they seldom receive.
“It’s something that gives all the public employees a real sense of pride,” Hellmich said. “They don’t always get a lot of public recognition in their jobs, and this is a chance to get together and show what they can do.”
That framing is worth taking seriously. Public works crews handle drainage, road repair, storm cleanup and utility work — largely invisible until something fails. A day built around demonstrating their competence in front of an audience is a rare inversion of that dynamic.
Mayors take the controls
In addition to the crew competitions, mayors from several municipalities are scheduled to face off in a special challenge, placing local leaders behind the controls of the same heavy machinery their public works crews operate daily. Organizers expect it to be one of the day’s more entertaining segments, for reasons that require little explanation.
Music, food and a cause
The Roadeo will feature live music from the band Chitlin Switch throughout the day. Food will be available for purchase, and proceeds from lunch sales will benefit Youth Reach Gulf Coast, a local nonprofit organization.
