A longtime Mobile educator has earned one of Catholic education’s highest honors. Gwen Byrd, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Mobile, received the 2019 Lead. Learn. Proclaim. Award from the National Catholic Educational Association.

The award, presented Tuesday evening at the NCEA’s annual convention in Chicago, recognizes what the organization describes as dedication and commitment to excellence in Catholic education. Byrd was selected from a field of more than 150,000 teachers and administrators nationwide.

Now in her 37th year as superintendent, Byrd leads the Catholic school system serving south Alabama under the Archdiocese of Mobile.
