MOBILE, Ala. — Alabama State held South Alabama to four hits in a 5-0 baseball win Tuesday night at Eddie Stanky Field.

The Jaguars left 14 runners on base and fell to 1-3.

Estevez Earns the Win

Alabama State right-hander Mike Estevez pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and five walks, to earn his first win of the season.

South Alabama left-hander Jared Gates took the loss despite allowing one run on three hits over seven innings, with three strikeouts and one walk.

Gates Settles In

Richard Amion homered to left-center for the Hornets in the game’s first at-bat. Gates then retired 18 of the next 19 batters, with a sixth-inning walk the only exception, and the next batter after the walk grounded into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Missed Chances

South Alabama nearly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Logan Kirkland singled to left with a runner in scoring position, but Alabama State’s left fielder threw out Davis Knapp at the plate.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Jaguars loaded the bases with two outs on three walks, but Hornets right-hander Hunter McIntosh got a flyout to center to end the inning.

Hornets Pull Away

Alabama State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth, and its catcher hit a two-run single to left for a 3-0 lead. Dexter Price added a two-run home run in the ninth.
